Prep for Prep’s Lilac Ball on June 10 was a resounding success, raising $3 million (net) and attracting close to 1,200 guests to the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel.
The gala was a tribute to Prep supporters Jane Hartley, CEO and a Founding Principal of Observatory Group, Ralph Schlosstein, President and CEO of Evercore Partners, and to the 152 members of Prep’s high school Class of 2013. Prep Trustee William A. Shutzer served as Event Chair. More than 150 Prep alumni supporters were on hand to celebrate.
After accepting the Lilac Ball award, Schlosstein told the guests, “We both got to see firsthand the power of the Prep for Prep program at Trinity School where our two children were students. Prep students not only apply to the best colleges in the country, they get into them, they enroll in them, they thrive once there, and they graduate. Then they go on to outstanding graduate schools and become leaders in every conceivable field of endeavor.”
Senior Speakers Roger Ng-A-Qui (P9 XXII/Exeter ’13, Yale) and Eni Popoola (XXIX/Spence ’13, Harvard) served as Masters of Ceremonies. In his speech, Roger urged his fellow seniors to look ahead to develop the next generation of emerging leaders: “As thousands of other Prep graduates have done before us, my fellow seniors and I will make our mark on the world and at the same time, we will pay it forward. We will give young people more opportunities, support our neighborhoods, and enrich our schools. We must never stop striving to do and be more.”
Nearly 90% of this year’s Prep high school class was admitted to colleges characterized as "Most Competitive" or “Highly Competitive,” according to Barron’s 2013 Profiles of American Colleges. Penn is the leading college choice, with 10 students enrolling from this year’s class, followed by Amherst (7), Susquehanna (7), Wesleyan (7), Columbia (6), Williams (6), and Yale (6).
Since 1986, the Lilac Ball has served as Prep’s keystone event. It not only honors a corporate leader with a commitment to education and young people, but also celebrates the hard work and the achievements of our high school seniors. Proceeds from the event support Prep’s mission of creating a more diverse national leadership pool by providing New York’s most promising students of color access to a superior education and life-changing opportunities.
