Traciann Celestin (XXXI) Wins Princeton Prize in Race Relations

Prep is pleased to announce high school senior Traciann Celestin (XXXI/Nightingale) is one of two New York City winners of the Princeton Prize in Race Relations.
The Prize was established in 2003 to commend young people across the nation working to increase understanding and mutual respect among all races. Traciann is an effective advocate for enhancing conversations about race in her community. She organized her classmates, teachers, and the school board to host Nightingale’s first-ever Diversity Day and lobbied to make this an annual event. She has also promoted diversity hiring at the school and organized a march to address national conversations about race relations.

Upon learning her daughter won the award, Traciann’s mother wrote, “This letter comes from my heart to express how grateful I am as a mother. I thank Prep for Prep for setting such a strong foundation. Your program has helped my daughter grow into a mature young woman, and I couldn’t be more proud of her.”

Traciann joins a distinguished group of Prep students recognized by the Princeton Prize. Ali Salas (XXV/Town '05, Packer '09, Barnard '13), Marcel Salas (XXV/Town '05, Packer '09, Penn '13), and Adeyemi Mchunguzi (XXV/Packer '09, Davidson '13) won the award in 2008 for their documentary film, “Sticks and Stones May Break My Bones, but Words Will Never Hurt Me?” The trio was inspired by a Prep for Prep-sponsored trip, Sojourn to the Past, where they embarked on a civil rights journey through the South to hear from key participants of the Civil Rights Movement. Upon their return, the students filmed the documentary to explore the power of biased language.

Their collective efforts impact not only their schools, but also the larger independent school and Prep communities. Congratulations to all of the participants.
