First Prep Alum to Earn Nieman Fellowship at Harvard

Lauren Williams (P9 XIII/Middlesex '04, Georgetown '08) is Prep for Prep’s first Nieman Fellow. The Nieman Foundation aims to promote and elevate the standards of journalism. Its fellowship supports 24 global journalists annually to spend a year at Harvard strengthening their knowledge and leadership skills. Lauren is currently the Features Editor at Essence magazine.
Nieman Fellows have gone on to assume senior leadership positions in newsrooms, produce groundbreaking journalism in every medium, and win the industry’s top honors. Lauren will use her fellowship year to study the historic contributions of black women to American society, with a specific focus on their influence on culture.

At Essence, Lauren’s recent work includes the magazine's iconic cover story of President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama in Fall 2016. Following the fellowship announcement, The Atlantic interviewed Lauren about her career and the role of mentors in the media industry. She credits her mentor, Essence Editor-in-Chief Vanessa De Luca, for creating opportunities for her professional growth and success: “Especially as a black woman, you have to have an advocate at corporations like this. If you don’t have someone in the room when you’re not there, singing your praises and pushing your name to the front, it’s a very, very difficult thing to navigate.”
