Announcing Prep’s Third Truman Scholar
Please join us to congratulate Tania Calle (XXXII/Calhoun '16, Williams), recently named a 2019 Truman Scholar. She is one of 62 Scholars nationwide selected from among 840 candidates nominated by 346 colleges and universities.The Truman Scholarship is the premier graduate scholarship for aspiring public service leaders in the United States and provides up to $30,000 toward graduate study.
Tania is the proud daughter of Ecuadorian immigrants and grew up in Corona, Queens. Her passion for empowering immigrant communities guides her studies and professional path.
Prep for Prep's Preparatory Component in middle school and Aspects of Leadership retreats in high school provided Tania with a foundation for ethical and effective leadership. Through Prep’s internship program, she honed vital policy and public health research skills with the Center for Popular Democracy and the New York Academy of Medicine.
She has also participated in the Summer Undergraduate Minority Research Program at the University of Pennsylvania, where she contributed to an HIV/AIDS and trauma study. She is particularly interested in reducing barriers to reproductive healthcare faced by migrant women.
This summer, Tania will participate in an NIH-funded clinical research training program in Quito, Ecuador to study the socio-cultural determinants of teen pregnancy.

"I believe health care is a human right," said Tania. "Medical practitioners must uphold their responsibility of patient advocacy by inserting their voices in national policy debates and supporting legislation that shapes healthier structural and political environments. As a future doctor, I want to gain frontline experience delivering medical care while also advocating for policies that preserve the health of vulnerable populations, particularly undocumented communities."
After finishing her undergraduate studies at Williams College, Tania plans to enroll in an MD/MPH program to conduct public health research and inform national debates on immigration reform. In the future, she also hopes to open a community clinic to serve undocumented patients.
