Young Photographer Wins Scholastic Gold Medal

Jeffrey Chung (XXVII/Collegiate) won a National Gold Medal for photography from the prestigious Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.  Dating back to 1923, the Awards include “a noteworthy roster of past winners [such as] Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford, and Joyce Carol Oates.”
Moreover, the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities has chosen the winning work, “The Waiting Room”, to be shown in an exhibition in the fall at the Department of Education building in Washington, D.C.  He took the photo in Switzerland last summer during his trip with the Experiment in International Living, Prep's partner in travel abroad.

Jeffrey shared the following about the image:
“I took the photograph during a hike through Saas-Fee, a skiing village in the Canton of Valais. Although I first captured the moment because of the arresting beauty of the scene, I later named it "The Waiting Room" because it evokes a state of anticipation and reveals a glimmer of hope beyond the initial appearance of decay.”
