Director of Professional Advancement

Organization Summary: Prep for Prep is an education and leadership development program that develops ethical and effective leaders who reflect our diverse society. Prep identifies New York City's most promising students of color, prepares them for success at the nation's top independent schools throughout the Northeast, and supports their academic and personal growth through college graduation. Position Summary: The Director of Professional Advancement reports to the Director of Development and Strategic Partnerships.
 
Responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to, the following:
 
  • Possess established leadership and expertise in career development, knowledge of employment trends, and awareness of skills and competencies across career fields and on local and national levels.
  • Initiate contact with employers, support established recruitment initiatives related to the internship program, and continue commitments to develop talent pipelines.
  • Advise first-generation, racially diverse high school and undergraduate students in determining their interests and abilities, providing individual career support to students seeking resources and advice, including but not limited to initiating connections with alums and introductions to company recruitment personnel, sharing educational and professional networking events, and promoting career services options available at students' respective academic institutions.
  • Foster and sustain innovation, collaboration, shared decision-making, and strategic partnerships, integrating programs and initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Leadership Development Opportunities to develop and implement a career planning curriculum for high school students and undergraduates.
  • Conduct group workshops on various topics, including writing resumes, cover letters, and successful job interviewing.
  • Maintain a limited roster of college students to help students craft a long-term plan for reaching their career objectives.
  • Supervise the Professional Advancement Program Managers and develop a coherent overall approach to developing relationships with, responding to, and interacting with a broad range of potential employers of high school and college students.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Development and Strategic Partnerships to manage and identify trustee and corporate contacts where appropriate to support fundraising efforts.
  • Work with the Director of Undergraduate Affairs to provide updated student information and data relevant to student performance and requests for personal support.
  • Work in conjunction with the Director of Alumni/ae Affairs to develop meaningful roles for alums/ae in the overall life of the organization related to Professional Advancement, specifically.
  • Coordinate with the Alumni Affairs department where appropriate on career and networking events and disseminate information about internships and job opportunities to Alumni Affairs.
  • Act as liaison with trustees who assume responsibility for any professional advancement tasks, forces, sub-committees, and chair of the Professional Advancement Committee.
  • Act as liaison with alums to develop opportunities and potential Professional Advancement partnerships.
  • Attend conferences and professional association events to remain knowledgeable on student career initiatives, diversity programming, hiring practices, and issues relevant to Prep for Prep students. 
  • Assist in developing a budget, supervising expenditures, and maintaining fiscal responsibility.
  • Establish office policies and procedures, prepare regular reports, document and analyze research data relevant to student and alumni career planning and placement, and implement a structure for receiving, distributing, and disseminating Professional Advancement communication.
  • Communicate and share supplemental experiential opportunities with appropriate Prep for Prep departments overseeing the relevant student population.
 
Qualifications, Skills, Experience:
  • Required: A bachelor's Degree, ideally in human resources, management or another business field, counseling, psychology, education, or a related discipline.
  • Required: 3-5 years of relevant professional-level experience in corporate recruitment, career services, counseling, student personnel, human resources, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated evidence of strong written and oral communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills in formal and informal settings.
  • Detailed-oriented, highly organized, excellent problem-solver and project leader, adept at managing multiple and competing priorities promptly and efficiently.
  • Ability to work well with high school students, undergraduates, colleagues, community stakeholders, and supporters from various backgrounds and experiences.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, provide strategic thought leadership, and interact well with various constituent groups.

  • Demonstrate commitment to serving and preparing underserved, racially, and culturally diverse students for academic success.
  • Competent user of MS Office including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, comfortable with databases and Google Docs.
 
 
Compensation: The annual base salary range is $95,000 to $115,000.
