Prep Seniors Named Gates Millennium Scholars

Prep is pleased to announce two of our high school seniors were named 2015 Gates Millennium Scholars. Jada Baijnath (XXXI/Poly Prep ’15, Princeton) and Brian Zhao (XXXI/Dalton ’15, Brown) were selected for their exceptional academic endeavors and dedication to their communities. Endowed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the scholarship removes financial barriers to college for outstanding students of color and provides mentoring, leadership development, academic, and social support throughout their undergraduate careers.
Jada also earned a Certificate of Accomplishment at this year’s Princeton Prize for Race Relations for her research project on mixed race identities at Poly Prep. In addition to designing and administering a survey for nearly 100 members of the school community, Jada planned a workshop completed by mixed-race students and families as well as a panel discussion for the Upper School. Her own experiences as a mixed-raced student sparked her interest in the topic. She is also an accomplished musical actress, having starred in multiple school productions including West Side Story and Pirates of Penzance. Through Prep’s Professional Advancement program, she is interning at Rockefeller University’s chemical biology lab this summer as part of its competitive Summer Science Research Program. Jada will study molecular biology at Princeton in the fall.

Brian has conducted Alzheimer’s research at Weill Cornell Medical College since his freshman year of high school, a disease that has affected his grandparents. At age 17 he researched a molecule that prevents the harmful clumping of amyloid beta peptides and applied for a patent. Brian is also a regional finalist in the nation’s premier science competition, the Siemens Prize, and earned a Rising Scientist Award from the Child Mind Institute. Brian’s commitment to the sciences and his community earned him admittance to Brown University’s BA/MD program, where he will matriculate this fall after completing a Prep-sponsored internship at Alpine Capital Bank.

Congratulations to Jada and Brian on all of their accomplishments! Prep for Prep is proud and humbled to be a part of their journeys.
