Prep for Prep’s Lilac Ball on June 11 was a resounding success, raising more than $3 million (net) and attracting more than 1,100 guests to the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. The gala was a tribute to Prep supporter David B. Heller, former Global Co-Head of the Securities Division at Goldman, Sachs & Co. and to the 141 members of Prep’s high school Class of 2012. Prep Trustees Valentino D. Carlotti and Daniel S. Loeb served as Event Chairs. More than 150 Prep alumni supporters were on hand to celebrate.
After accepting the Lilac Ball award, Heller told the guests, “Prep kids set high goals, they achieve them, and they give back—just what you want to see from our next generation of leaders.”
Senior Speakers Franchesca Diaz (P9 XXI/Middlesex ’12, Harvard) and Rafael Ramirez (XXVIII/Collegiate ’12, Columbia) served as Masters of Ceremonies. In his speech, Rafael urged his fellow seniors to give back to the communities that fostered their growth: “Because of our experiences as Prep students we do not have the luxury of being ignorant to society’s problems. Not only are we intimately aware of the issues, but we have the tools, drive, and understanding to help solve them.”
91% of this year’s Prep high school class was admitted to colleges characterized as "Most Competitive" or “Highly Competitive,” according to Barron’s 2011 Profiles of American Colleges. Wesleyan is the leading college choice, with eight students enrolling from this year’s class, followed by Amherst (7), Princeton (7), and Cornell (6).
Since 1986, the Lilac Ball has served as Prep’s keystone event. It not only honors a corporate leader with a commitment to education and young people, but also celebrates the hard work and the achievements of our high school seniors. Proceeds from the event support Prep’s mission of creating a more diverse national leadership pool by providing New York’s most promising students of color access to a superior education and life-changing opportunities.
