Director of Data Management

Position Summary: The Director of Data Management is an inaugural position and a leadership role responsible for advancing Prep for Prep toward a truly data-driven culture—one in which data is trusted, accessible, and actively used to guide strategic, programmatic, and operational decision-making.

The Director provides stewardship and day-to-day leadership for Prep for Prep’s Salesforce platform, supporting its continued stabilization, enhancement, and long-term evolution; inheriting a partially implemented system and leading its continued stabilization, implementation, and evolution across the organization. Working closely with internal stakeholders and Salesforce implementation consultants, the Director will guide the ongoing build and enhancement of the platform while strengthening reporting, performance management, and evaluation practices. This role will also build staff capacity through training and assess the department structure needed to effectively support data management and analytics, ensuring data becomes an everyday tool that supports stronger programs and better outcomes for students.

This full-time, exempt position reports to the Chief Advancement Officer.

This position is based at Prep for Prep’s West 71st Street office in Manhattan.

Responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to, the following:

Data Strategy, Governance & Culture
  • Build and sustain a data-driven culture that uses data to inform decision-making at all levels of the organization.
  • Assess existing data systems, structures, and practices to identify strengths, gaps, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Establish and refine data governance standards, including data definitions, quality controls, documentation, privacy, and security.
  • Support a strong, data-based evaluation culture that promotes continuous learning, accountability, and improvement.
Salesforce Leadership & Systems Stewardship
  • Dotted-line oversight of the Technology team regarding Salesforce and other internal applications.
  • Provide stewardship and operational leadership to support the continued evolution of a partially implemented Salesforce system into a stable, fully utilized platform.
  • Ensure Prep for Prep fully leverages Salesforce capabilities, including automation, reporting, dashboards, and integrations.
  • Partner with internal teams and external Salesforce implementation consultants to refine configurations and improve data architecture.
  • Oversee system enhancements, testing, documentation, troubleshooting, and change management to ensure reliable performance and a strong user experience.
Reporting, Analytics & Performance Management
  • Evaluate and enhance existing reports and dashboards to strengthen performance management across all functions.
  • Develop clear, actionable reporting that enables leadership and managers to monitor progress, assess outcomes, and make informed decisions.
  • Translate complex or incomplete data into meaningful insights while steadily improving data quality, consistency, and reliability.
Training, Capacity-Building & Partnership
  • Deliver ongoing Salesforce and data literacy training that reflects the system’s current state while preparing staff for future enhancements.
  • Support user adoption by meeting teams where they are and progressively deepening comfort and sophistication in data use.
  • Provide oversight, prioritization, and quality control for external consultants supporting data reporting, analysis, and system development.
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Leadership
  • Partner closely with Programs, Development, Finance, Technology, and Operations teams to align system enhancements with organizational priorities.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to senior leadership on data strategy, system investments, and tradeoffs.
  • Support funder reporting, audits, and compliance requirements by strengthening data accuracy, documentation, and processes.
Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
  • 7+ years of experience in data management, analytics, or systems leadership, ideally within education or mission-driven nonprofit organizations.
  • Demonstrated experience in inheriting, stabilizing, and improving existing data systems or CRM platforms.
  • Deep expertise in Salesforce administration, reporting, and optimization (Salesforce Administrator certification strongly preferred).
  • Strong analytical, project management, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred
  • Experience supporting education programs and outcomes measurement.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams and external consultants.
  • Knowledge of data privacy, security, and compliance considerations.
  • Strong facilitation and adult-learning skills.
  • Knowledge of AI integration with CRMs is a plus.

Working Conditions
 
This is a hybrid position, with three days in the office and two days remote. However, depending on the department's needs, this role may be required to work in person more than three days per week. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required around major events.

Compensation: $115,000-$120,000 based on the candidate's qualifications and experience.
