In Conversation: Prep for Prep CEO Ruth Jurgensen and Colgate-Palmolive Chairman, President & CEO Noel Wallace

Ruth Jurgensen sat down with Noel Wallace and Colgate-Palmolive leaders to discuss their approach to leadership in a time of uncertainty.
The one-year anniversary of the start of the pandemic came and went, but there is still much to be learned. As leaders at work and in their communities, Prep for Prep CEO Ruth Jurgensen, Colgate-Palmolive Chairman, President & CEO Noel Wallace, Chief Legal Officer & Secretary Jennifer Daniels, and Vice President & General Manager, North America Oral Care Dana Medema, came together to discuss their approach to leadership, especially during this time of uncertainty and change.

Starting Strong: Listening and Learning
Even before the pandemic, Prep for Prep students and alumni were no strangers to change. After completing the Preparatory Component program, our students are placed in independent schools and boarding schools that may be very different from the schools they previously attended in neighborhoods different from their own. Jennifer acknowledged, “every time you start something new, it’s a little scary. Whether its’ starting at a new prep school, college, or job, take that time to listen and learn about the environment and culture. Listen for that place where you can make an impact. Don’t doubt yourself. If you got into that school, that job, you are qualified.”

Making an Impact: Self-Awareness and Coachability
But once you find that place where you can make an impact, how do you lead? “One element that is critically important is self-awareness,” said Noel. “Leaders have to be highly self aware of their impact on others.” For Dana, taking in and applying advice is key. “When you think of really great athletes, they are all coachable. Coachability is key to being a good leader. Don’t react in the moment, listen, and then do something with it.”

The Power of Mentorship
It may be difficult to find mentors, those that you can trust at work, school, or elsewhere, but Ruth is confident that as long as you keep your eyes open, you’ll find your people. “It was very challenging to be a Black woman in a predominantly white space,” said Ruth, reflecting on a previous work experience. “Work as tirelessly as you can to get to that place where you can be authentic... You will always find, if you are open to it, people who can see for you more than you can see for yourself. That’s what Prep does. We need people to see us and amplify the best in us, and offer us opportunities to be leaders. That’s the only way I became a leader.”

We are grateful to Colgate-Palmolive for their support of the leadership development and professional advancement of Prep for Prep students. Thank you to all participants and attendees who joined us.
